REGINA SILVEIRA. GALERIA METTA

REGINA SILVEIRA

A large part of the latest production of the artist –in the field of spatial intervention –, focuses her interest on the visual frontier of windows, panes, skylights, ceilings, which means spatial thresholds that the light strengthens in their external/internal communication/passage. (Solombra, Behind the glass, Vórtice, Todas las noches, Equinócio, Lumen, Luz/Zul, for example, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2003, respectively.) Thus also the pertinence of Umbrales, of its frontier significance, of its metamorphosed umbra (shadow): whether in the shadow that is on the wall of the gallery (the concave Umbra), the manifest fictionality of Double and also of Quimera. At the same time, the title that it is intended to give to that sphere of Umbra alludes to the meaning of passage, although it functions as a gateway in Twilight or with spatial limits in Mirante or Lunar.

Therefore, from a range of light sources, Umbrales is composed and structured. In this sense, it is significant to observe the different operations to which light is subjected:  interposition of real or imaginary bodies, pairing up of objects, projection of a range of light sources, reflections, the game of transmutations, distortions, visual mirages, etc. If there is a certain visual charm in this exhibition which presents pieces that are already recognised and valued, above all in the Brazilian sphere, now together in a new articulation they feed the observations made about a common concept. Apart from that, Umbrales presents three completely new works, Twilight, Lumina and Umbra, which are highly representative of the character of visual transit and of hybrid physiognomy of the exhibition, as well as its proposed itinerary.   Extract of the edited catalogue by Galería Metta.
